Hi Everyone,
I am including the body of a recent email from Dan Rhinehart about the Excello Fuel Injection pump. Does anyone have contact information for Mr. Blackburn?
I have heard a lot of misinformation about the care and feeding of the Excello fuel injector systems.
To start with; it is important that the fuel injector pump is properly overhauled by someone who is qualified to do the job. Most if not all problems that people are having stem from pumps that are in need of overhaul. In this instance D.S. Blackburn of Yukon, Oklahoma is most likely the best person for the job as he has the proper flow bench etc to do the job.
For example many pumps need the serge diaphragm (located on the bottom of the pump) replaced.
Another issue is the starting procedure which is as follows:
Prime the engine with about three shots of prime (leave the primer open), crack the throttle about one eighth of an inch and pull the prop through about six blades. Turn the switch to both and start the engine with the primer open. Only close and lock the primer after the engine has started and run for a few seconds.
The reason for this is that the open primer circuit allows fuel to be drawn into the induction system and atomized in much the same manner as a carburetor's needle and seat does in the venturi of a carburetor. This for all purposes could be described as forming a rudimentary carburetor in the induction system which allows the engine to start and run while the fuel injection system purges it self of air etc. The engine will run from idle speed up to about 1,200 RPM with the primer valve opened and the injector pump fuel valve closed.
This is the secret to starting an Excello fuel injected engine hot or cold.
I hope that this helps.
Best wishes, Dan
